21 – design and build a mobile app.

We had to build a mobile app based off of anything we wanted to I picked ‘SheffSecurity’ for my app I was going to be doing. we had to design the app on any website we wanted although example website were provided on Shu space.

We were also provided with other helpful resources such as the provisional schedule for this outlining all the meetings and things we will be doing in sessions in class. we were also provided with ‘things to think about when designing apps’ document giving us helpful information about mobile app designing etc.




20 – use suitable technology to edit and distribute moving images.

We covered this in the second project to the one we covered competency 19, we were asked to do one or more videos for the group website. So we decided to go for a time-lapse for one of the campus buildings for effects which covers competency 20.
using suitable technology to edit and distribute moving images, with a group members help we able to apply this using Sony Vegas 8. we added a slow pan using crop/pan tools. we timed it on the timelapse, then just speeded up the video to really high levels to create the timelapse.
we have the file to transfer to each other using drop box where the whole group can access it.

19 – use suitable technology to edit and distribute still images.

We covered this a project we did about a website, working in groups our group discussed different ideas about what it could be about, we discussed art/graffiti/bars/shops etc. In the end we decided to just stick with the university itself because its easier. one group member offered to use their camera for high quality photo’s with his fancy Nikon D5300.

One member was handy with photography anyway so me and him decided to look at using software that he used, we ended up using Photoshop with high pass to edit the images to make them sharper.

Individual Project

We were all presented with an individual project depending on what course we picked for next year, I picked security so I had to go a little more in depth about the security part of the project. It was about a computer company called Computech, they were a company who were opening up a new office in Cleethorpes. they were having problems with their computers on the security side and wanted help. I found the project as a whole to be pretty comfortable, as I already have good knowledge on security in computing so I enjoyed the project as a whole. It was a good sense of problem solving which is what employers value.



18 – apply the basic concepts of machine logics

I completed this competency in the Arduino project, through the competency, I applied basic concepts of machine logics through the Simon says game we made with the flashing light and sequence programs which had wiring and programmes running on them in order for the game to run.

other programmes would work too, I did a practice project first which was 4 LED’s that  lit up using the arduino IDE.

17 – Design and build a control system

We covered this in the Arduino project as a whole because this ties in to the fact that we designed and built a Simon says flashing light game, which is classed as a control system because we inputted the commands and set the actions up. this completes competency 17, ‘design and build a control system’.

It also ties in to the Lego pick up robot we made in the Lego activities because the same thing, we used Lego mind storms ev3 to design and programme the robot which also completes this competency.

16 – describe web architecture fundamentals.

Covering this competency in the website activity, we had to describe the basic’s about web architecture. An example of basic web architecture can be how the web is a 2 tiered architecture,  so a web browser (pc viewing the website), will request for the webpage from the network, the network will then send a request for the webpage from the web server, which is then sent back as a HTML file to the network and then back to the web browser. I really find stuff like this to be useful because this could come in handy in future jobs and education especially with me picking information security for next year.

15 – identify the basic hardware components of a computer system.

In the IT essentials project we were provided with PC hardware work plan, performing and following these activities completes the competency. The most part is chapter 1 in the Cisco IT essentials website where it goes through a well set out introduction followed by personal computer systems, selecting computer components and configurations for specialized computer systems. when reading through these I found the ‘select computer components’ category really useful because I personally had not forgotten quite a little about hardware from the last time I did it so when it lays it out with the sup chapters like ‘building a computer’, ‘select the motherboard’, ‘select case and fans’ etc. I found that really simple to understand and catch up again on my knowledge of the subject.

12- Install and share a printer to meet requirements.

We covered this competency in the IT essentials two, this is because we were learning about Networks and having a printer on a network. Chapter 11 was taken up only about printers.


With printers, when your purchase a printer it will come with an installation disc, but if it doesn’t you can go to the manufacturer’s website. from here you can download the installer for the same printer. Once the printer is set up and plugged into the computer the computer will detect it automatically and download the drivers for it. if your printer or drivers are outdated for old printers then you can check the manufacturers website to update and install new ones.





13 – Design and configure simple computer network.

Covering this in the IT essentials project, we looked at designing and configuring a simple computer network. We went on NetAcad/Packet tracer index, where we have been completing tasks for configuring and designing networks.

In the tasks we had to use Cisco packet tracer. and also we had been able to connect laptops  and desktops and printers to connect together. Software like this lets you manage the network and devices connected to it as seen below.

We were mostly using IP configuration, PC wireless tools, web browsing for the configuration because clicking the router/printer/computer will allow you to configure them.
